KU to host second annual Summit on Community-Engaged Learning and Scholarship

Kate Kemper, Center for Service Learning

The KU Center for Service Learning will host the second annual virtual Summit on Community-Engaged Learning and Scholarship from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 13, 2022. The goal of the summit is to engage, connect and support University of Kansas faculty, staff, administrators and community partners with interest in:

  • Addressing community-identified issues through service learning, community-engaged scholarship or civic engagement
  • Examining the commitment of the public university in contributing to addressing societal issues through campus and community partnerships.

This year, the summit’s theme is “Expanding the Impact: Advancing a Shared Commitment to Community Engagement.” The program will feature keynote speaker Andrew Hoffman, Holcim (US) Professor of Sustainable Enterprise at the University of Michigan, at 10:30 a.m. In his book, “The Engaged Scholar,” Hoffman argues for the emergence of a more publicly and politically engaged scholar. Hoffman’s lecture is a call to make the path toward public engagement more acceptable and legitimate for the academic scholar in today’s world. This keynote is sponsored by The Commons and the KU Libraries.

The summit will begin with a special roundtable session moderated by Barbara Bichelmeyer, provost and executive vice chancellor, that includes KU leaders discussing the integration of community engagement through the Jayhawks Rising Strategic Doing planning process.

The summit also will feature presentations from KU faculty, staff and local community partners on topics including creative documentation and digital storytelling, preparing for mid-term elections and supporting sustained civic engagement, recognizing community engagement and community collaborations.
